Fantasy Comedy Movies

The middle ages were very funny - at least in these medieval and fantasy comedy movies.

Buy Medieval Fantasy Comedy Movies
The Princess Bride (1987)
directed by Rob Reiner, starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, with cameos by a whole bunch of other funny famous people

Lowly stableboy Westley pledges his love to Buttercup and becomes embroiled in the pursuit to rescue her from a variety of nefarious scamps. Slapstick and serious swordplay combined with light-hearted romance. Superb casting and direction, very witty screenplay (by William Goldman, author of the novel). A sure winner every time.

If you're a big fan of the Princess Bride, you'll want the The Princess Bride (Special Edition) DVD with its commentaries/interviews and footage shot by Elwes during production.

And you'll want the Princess Bride movie soundtrack by Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Special Edition (1975)
directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones and starring the Monty Python guys - Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin

With Monty Python and the Holy Grail we jump directly to this special edition DVD that has everything (and I mean everything) you could possibly want. I will date myself by revealing that during freshman year in college, we went and saw this film about a million times - my son is just now at an age to fully appreciate the Monty Python brand of humor. Who can forget the knights who say "Ni"? Not mi.

Army of Darkness - Director's Cut (1993)
directed by Sam Raimi, starring Bruce Campbell

Part 3 of Raimi's Evil Dead Series, Army of Darkness is a cult classic movie that pits a hero with a chainsaw for an arm against an evil army of the dead in the 14th century world he has time-traveled into. Yes, that sounds pretty strange. Technically, this is a horror movie, but it's filled with a black humor that some find absolutely irresistible.

Since this was a limited edition, it includes not just additional footage, but the "alternate ending."
A Knight's Tale (2001)
directed by Brian Helgeland, starring Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Paul Bettany

We loved A Knight's Tale from the beginning when the crowd at the tournament began singing "We Will Rock You." The movie soundtrack is filled with rock hits of the 70s, while the story is a light-hearted romantic comedy about a peasant boy who makes good with the lance, acquires Geoffrey Chaucer as his public relations manager, and eventually achieves both his dreams and the girl (of course). Absolutely delightful.

Of course, the movie score by Carter Burwell is well worth having - Knight's Tale

But even better is the CD of original hits used in the movie - A Knight's Tale soundtrack.
Robin Hood - Men in Tights (1993)
directed by Mel Brooks, starring Cary Elwes, Richard Lewis, Roger Rees, Tracy Ullman

Classic Mel Brooks. Friar Tuck has been transformed into Rabbi Tuchman (played by Mel himself). Some very funny bits, particularly the Merry Men singing and dancing. Maid Marion's chastity belt presents a problem for the bad guy, and Robin Hood is sent on a quest with a key (think about it). Brooks fans will definitely want to add it to their collections, and, as the movie's only available on VHS, it's an inexpensive treat for everyone.
